12/27/08 Northeastern Judo Championships

Ethan Waller continued his dominance in the 220lb. division . Going 4-0 in route to  1st place in the white/green belt division. He has yet to lose a fight in judo competition. Ironically his greatest competition in this tournament came from fellow MMA teamates. Steve Dehnz and Sal LuBrano took 2nd and 3rd Place respectively. Steve fought his way back from a first round loss to Ethan thru the repechage to face him again for the title ,Ethan prevailed by pin for 1st.  Sal Lubrano breezed thru the other side of the bracket by throwing both of his opponents for ippon, however lost to Ethan in the semi-final for a 3rd place finish. It is rare that one team takes the top three spots in a fairly large division. Pat Gasman continued to show guts and persistence at 178lb. and should be commended for his effort.  Sensei O'Carroll and Sensei Potenza are very proud of all the competitors. We are making a mark on the judo circuit and people are taking notice.  Thanks for all the hard work and lets continue to improve!

Another great show of skill and heart from Team Modern Martial Arts!

Mike Sofo started off the night by submitting his opponent with a guillotine choke in under a minute!
This was Mikes first fight, he's off to a great start!

Next up was Ivan Pinzan. Ivan took on an opponent 30 lbs heaver than him and was able to control the match from start to finish with submission attempts and always maintaining dominant position. Great fight Ivan!

Joe Giordano stepped up to the plate taking on a power lifter as his opponent. Joe was working for the guillotine choke, but was reversed and got caught in a side choke. It was a great show of heart.

In last minute pinch they needed a 185 lb fighter to take on an experienced Jujitsu fighter. With only 2 minutes notice George stepped up to fight! Although he has some prior training, George is fairly new to our school. George not only took the fight without notice, he controlled the action and nearly locked in several submissions! It was a very impressive show of character and heart! The future is bright for this warrior.

Main Event Jordan Kaufman fought in a Muay Thai bout against a very game opponent.
After 3 rounds of non-stop action the judges reached a (controversial) split decision. Although it seemed everyone other than the judges saw the fight in favor of Jordan, (even the other camp thought it should have been a draw at the very least), the decision went to his opponent.

The two warriors traded heavy punches and several submission attempts but Greg clearly got the better of the exchanges winning his bout by unanimous decision!
Congratulations kid, we are all very proud of you!!!

Matt McManmon also took on a very tough opponent named Phil Ferraro, (another undefeated fighter).
The fight was non stop action as the two fighters continuously exchanged strikes, and submission attempts! They went from start to finish never slowing the pace down!
It was an amazing show of skill and heart by both fighters, but Matt dominated the fight and it was his hand that would be raised by unanimous decision!
Great fight Matt!
